One thing you can't blame on menopause is memory loss. The normal forgetfulness comes with aging and it is practically inevitable. Hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, fatigue, bone loss, joint pain, all of these are menopause symptoms, and memory loss is not.

The latest researches on the relationship between menopause and memory loss were conducted on hundreds of women divided in two groups: perimenopausal and menopausal. The results showed that there was no difference. Both groups scored as well on different cognitive function tests.

If you are entering menopause, you don't need to worry about losing your memory. Memory loss during menopause is a myth started by women who felt that going through menopause reduced their mind sharpness. This is their perception and it is not true.

Studies suggesting that hormone replacement therapy might protect against dementia strengthened the belief that memory loss is caused by the hormonal imbalance at menopause. However, a large study later found that in older women, hormone replacement therapy not only didn't help protect women from dementia, but could actually increase the risk. So what is the truth?

The truth is that your cognitive skills might be temporarily affected by menopausal symptoms like hot flashes or insomnia. How many times you felt that your brain doesn't work right if you had trouble sleeping, even if you are not menopausal? It is normal to feel like that.

My conclusion is that I don't think declining estrogen levels is the cause of memory loss. It's not like your memory is bopping along, doing fine and then takes this big dive during menopause, like bone density can. Memory loss comes with aging, as a natural part of life, same as menopause.
