NEWS UPDATE: The UK recession will be one of the worse around the world

The UK recession will be "one of the worse around the world" and will be deeper than that seen in the early 1990s due to the banking crisis, a leading industry member has warned.

Speaking at Schroders annual funds briefing in New York, head of Schroders' multi-manager investment team, Anthony Yeadon however stressed that it would only "be a recession, not a depression", partly due to the government's quick intervention in the banking crisis having so far avoided any UK banks failing.

Yeadon also said there was likely to be an economic turnaround next year, but cautioned that we are not about to "slingshot" out of difficulty.

Despite this, he said the equity market could begin to grow in six to nine months time, making now a good entry point for equities, as a 40 per cent fall in earnings was already priced in.

"Things are clearly going to get worse and the headlines will get worse, but that is already priced into earnings, so now could be a good entry point."
